John Cowan is perhaps best known as the lead singer of New Grass Revival, but he has also been a rock singer and part of the group The Sky Kings. His tenor voice is featured here in 13 songs including six of his own compositions. The rock influence is evident in the prominent drum mix, but the lyrics transcend any one form of music. "Someone Give Me A Stone" is a hard driving reggae-feel story of David and Goliath. Scott Vestal gives the banjo a rock bounce in "Long Distance Run Around," and "Two Quarts Low" is a delightful romp with high speed banjo and mandolin. The tender side of life is reflected in "Blood," the story of home ties and family and "In My Father's Field," a spiritual reflection on comfort and peace. Not traditional bluegrass by any means, but fans of New Grass Revival might like to hear John Cowan's latest. |
